Hab of the Week: Selam Bekele

Name: Selam Bekele
Hometown: Addis Abeba
Describe your hustle/brand:
I’m a storyteller that represents for the underdogs of the world. Through filmmaking, photography, and community organizing, I’m working on disrupting stereotypes and preserving culture. My work is un-defining what it means to be young, black, Habesha, and a woman in the diaspora.
Some of your influences: Kids, elders, street art, African history.
What can we expect from you in the near future?
TZTA: Stories of Migration is a three-part series of short films I’m working on. The first component, Prince of Nowhere, has just made it’s debut in Oakland, CA as part of the HomexHome festival.
Now I’m working on taking Prince of Nowhere on tour with me this fall to DC, NY, and LA. We’ll host collective evenings in each city full of local artists, filmmakers, and musicians. The dates will go out in the beginning of October.
The next component of TZTA will be released in Spring 2015.
